Setup 2 - Synology DSM Test Results

2. Functionality Tests

Test 1. Motherboard failure
  • Setup SHR on ECS-NM70, migrated to Dell OptiPlex 780SF (Intel® Q45 Express Chipset w/ICH10DO). All data preserved. (A thank you note to Ah Kim who provided the Dell desktop)
  • Storage pool is automatically imported with no user intervention required.
  • Although this test is a success, the success rate is not as fool-proof as FreeNAS.
  • The replacement motherboard (essentially, the south bridge (SATA) & NIC drivers) needs to be supported in the Synology DSM rebuild which you used.
  • The CPU also needs to support 64 bit for build 3202.
Test 2. 1x HDD failure
  • Time taken to rebuild the RAID is dependent on storage size.
  • The larger the size of your storage volume, the longer you got to wait.
  • Rebuild time is irrelevant to the amount of data on storage volume; The rebuild time will be identical no matter you have 1MB or 1TB of data.
Test 3. Storage Scalability
  • 5 simple clicks to add another 2TB to storage volume; a piece of cake.
  • The time taken to expand the storage volume (adding another 2TB HDD) is about 24hrs.
  • Suits most consumers as we usually upgrade the storage volume disk by disk.
Test 6. User Experience
  • Top performer
  • Excellent resource monitoring tools
  • Lots of apps
  • Refined GUI
  • Scalable RAID architecture
  • Everything works except upgrading of OS
  • Apps, temperature, USB devices all work like a charm.
  • Cannot upgrade OS as this is a rebuild version.

What You See Is What You Get
The rebuild version is exactly the same as an official Synology DSM minus the OS upgrade option. So far, everything works for my setup. What you see on the actual Synology DSM, is what you get on the rebuild version. I have tested three apps and all works flawlessly.

  1. great site. I have just ordered my N54L and I am quite uncertain which OS I should install.

I am tending to install DSM because of the good performance and media support, but I did not find out, if automatic powering down and waking up by WOL works. Did you check that out?

  2. I like N54L enclosure except for the rear plane which makes it challenging if you want to swap the motherboard to another make / model.

For WOL to work, you will need to edit the MAC address of the DSM boot image.
